Me, My Dog, Three Audio Books And 2000 Miles
Last year at about this time I was packing up my home in Tampa Florida and heading to new digs in Denver Colorado. I was facing three long days of driving accompanied only by my faithful dog, Honey, who, I'm afraid, is not much of a conversationalist. I was dreading those long, tedious hours behind the wheel. I'm sure you know what I'm speaking of; waiting for lunch so you can get out of the car for a bit and realizing that breakfast was only 25 minutes ago. My traveling companion was no help; she's always ready for lunch.
It was an old friend of mine that made the suggestion that I try a audio book (no, not Honey. She was prepared to eat our way to Colorado.) So, I stopped by a local book store and purchased three audio books on CD. They were pretty expensive at a cost of nearly $100.00 for the three of them, but I was willing to try anything to keep myself awake and alert.
I had expected to listen to music and use the novels as a break from my usual collection of tunes, but I was really surprised. The production quality of the first novel (The Husband, by
Dean Koontz) was fantastic; not the droning monotone I was expecting. I finished the first novel. It was an exciting experience and one that kept me quite interested as I made my way across the U.S. I found I couldn't "put it down". I was hoping that the second (The Collectors, by David Baldacci) would be as good as the first and I was not disappointed. Again, the production quality was top notch with Tom Wopat and Maggi-Meg Reed doing the reading (acting). This novel carried me to my destination. I arrived surprisingly rested, relaxed and sane considering I had just driven almost 2000 miles in three days. Most of that was through flat and completely (except for that one tree) devoid of interesting landscape.
I have since begun listening to motivational, business and inspirational audio books all with great results. While I used these in the beginning only when traveling, I have started listening while doing errands in town and have found that it makes the time in traffic much more bearable, even pleasant. Doing dishes and general housework has also been much less daunting when accompanied by a great story.
I was thinking that I would enjoy listening to more of these if only they weren't so expensive. At an average price of $30 each I needed to find an alternative. I found my answer on the internet. There is an astonishingly large selection there and downloading in MP3 format has been the answer for me. At less than half the price of audio books purchased from the book stores and with the option of burning them to disk, copying to my iPod or simply leaving them on my computer for listening at home, this has been an economical and effective method to feed my audio book habit and not "break the bank".
