5 Compelling Audio Books For Cardio Workouts
Some days, getting on the treadmill can take all of the determination you can muster. Once on, you have to will yourself not to watch the seconds tick by, which of course, makes the workout seem even longer.
Listening to audio books has become my favorite way to prevent exercise mental fatigue. Often, a good book can get me to the gym and keep me on the machines longer.
Fortunately, I live in a county that has a great public library system. I can choose among hundreds of audio books and download them for free-10 at a time-using my library membership online. Essentially, you are downloading the rights to listen to the audio book for a fixed time, usually three weeks. After that time, the book is erased from your download console automatically when you log in to check out more audio books. I urge you to find out whether your local library systems offer the same services.
If your library system does not offer audio books to download, you can try several audio book clubs, such as audiobooks.com and audiobooksforfree.com, that allow you to download books for a fee each month.
The treadmill is not the ideal place to listen to War and Peace. That masterpiece requires much more energy and concentration than I can expend while exercising. The alternative is not pure brain candy-plot-driven books that leave you feeling that you have just wasted your time. You can still find well-written, insightful books that lend themselves to listening in increments.
Here are five that I have enjoyed while working out.
Confessions of a Contractor, by Richard Murphy. In this book, screenwriter Murphy takes us into the lives of a home contractor and his clients. Yes, the contractor sleeps with one of his clients. But Murphy does go further, making you think about the relationships people have with the places they live.
A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson. After living in England for 20 years, Bryson returns to his native America and decides to walk the 2, 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. His reasons are varied, and fitness is one of them. Bryson's writing style and humor make this book extremely fun. And you want to find out if he actually does it.
Good Harbor, Anita Diamant. The characters of Diamant's follow-up to The Red Tent make this book compelling. The focus is a friendship that develops between two, middle-aged women. I found the story heartening and admired the way Diamant told it.
Eat Cake, Jeanne Ray. The protagonist of this book bakes cakes to deal with the stress in her life. A teen daughter, a newly unemployed husband, and a live-in mother all contribute to her stress. This is a light book. Danis Hoover, reviewing it for the American Library Association's Booklist describes it quite well: "While it might be said that this is a predictable and undemanding book, it is also a comforting one, and perhaps signals a new genre that might be called 'domestic fantasy.'"
Just After Sunset: Stories, by Stephen King. If you haven't read Stephen King or haven't read his non-horror works, you must give his newest collection of short stories a listen. He is masterful at telling stories. Save this collection of 14 stories for your workouts. Trust me, you'll look forward to getting to the gym so that you can get to the next story.
