Audio And Video File Search On Google - Search Google Smarter
I go to a small college that used to constantly pressure students to stop using file sharing networks on the schools network because they were facing legal trouble. Even if you weren't downloading copyrighted material you still got in trouble if you were caught using any of the networks like lime-wire. Well this year the IT staff just decided to block all of these networks. They even blocked torrents from being downloaded (I thought I was so smart when I thought to download torrent files when I saw lime-wire was blocked). Well after much searching around the internet I found that the best way around these restrictions was simply learn to search google a little smarter.
What you want to do is use google's search limiting options when you search. I'm going to show you the code I use to search google for music and then I'll walk you through it (or if you don't care just copy and paste). The search is: intitle:"index.of" (mp3|mp4|m4a) song.title.or.artist.here -html -htm -cgi -php Okay the first thing we see in this search is the intitle:"index.of" command. This is going to return only web sites with a title that contains the words "index of" in it. These sites are usually directories of files. The files we want these directories to contain are listed in parenthesizes separated by a "|" (shift + backslash). In this example we are searching for .mp3 .mp4 and .m4a(iTunes) files. You can replace these filetypes with anything. For instance when searching for video files I usually put in "avi|dvd|mpeg" or something like that. Again this will return sites that contain avi dvd and mpeg files. Next we see the part where we put in the title of the audio or video file. Remember to separate each word with a period and not a space. While this is not necessary it is helpful because it will return files with not only spaces separating words but also underscores, slashes, and things like that. So if we put "name of a song" we will not see the file labeled "name_of_song.mp3" Finally the end part of this text will sort out things we don't want to search for. We do not want to search for html files or cgi or php files (feel free to add more files types at the end if your search is returning too many junk files). An extremely helpful and time saving tip when using this "google super search" is to use firefox's keywords (if you don't have firefox, get it). What you want to do is enter the above search into google (it doesn't matter what is in the title part) and then hit ctrl+b. This brings up the bookmarks tab in firefox. Right click somewhere and click "add new bookmark." Copy and paste the site URL from google after you searched using the above search. When the URL is pasted into the "location" box look in the URL for the part where is has your song title or whatever file you searched for. delete that part and insert "%s" and then name the book mark something like "music" and then put the title in the "keyword" box also. So your "add bookmark" window should look like this: Name: musicLocation: http://www.google.com/search
Keyword: music When you have this hit okay and you're done. Now when you want to search google for music or videos you can simply type into the address bar "music title.of.song.or.video" and that will search google for you with the above mentioned line without having to retype every time. You can also save another bookmark named "video" or something for a separate search, just remember to use the keyword option and to insert" %s" where the title of the song/video would go. Okay hope this has been helpful to anyone looking for an alternate way to search for audio or video files. Just remember no copyrighted stuff! That's not good and/or legal. By Sean Moore -
