Free Music
What is free for me, is some one else cost.
We work for money and if some one at work, ask us to stay extra time, we then want that overtime or comp time. But if we do not get it, we feel like some one is mistreating us. What happens then when a music group and/or author(s) intention is to get some money back from each song, book, movie or video copy? It is fair to mistreat some one, when we do not like to be mistreated? Please continue reading and send me your opinions.
On the Devils Side
Recording music from the radio and downloading is the same. Why I have to pay if I can get it for free!! Yea, those big guys from Sony have more money than I have. Plus those prices are too much! What they think we are millionaires? And if is illegal why they don't shut down those places that let you download or share music, movies and e-books.
This is a free world and I don't want to pay for that. Plus with the gas prices, who wants to go to the store and search for hours for a song. In Lime wire I do a search and download all I needed and some one pay for that already. So they are making money anyway!
I saw in the internet that researchers believe that most downloading is done over peer-to-peer networks by teens and college kids, groups that are "money-poor but time-rich, " meaning they wouldn't have bought the songs they downloaded. In that sense, the music industry can't claim those downloads as lost record sales. In fact, illegal downloading may help the industry slightly with another major segment. Yes, because in the past the radio promoted a music by letting people to hear for free in the radio. Now the Internet do it in the same way.
In the Right Side
If some have the intention and gives you something a present it is fair. But if the same person is selling something and you get it free, something is wrong somewhere and justifications are only good for the person that says it.
If you take a dime or a thousand dollars and neither one are yours, you are stealing. You can justify anything but still is good or is bad, be your own judge.
You write a song, and play it and sound good. Then you write a lot of more songs during the year and select some of them. Do a demo and go to an A&R, the division of a record label company responsible for scouting and artist development record label. You have your foot in.
They see potential in you ask you to sign a contract and help you to burn a CD. You go around the country promoting your music and sales start to bring money to you, but not enough. But your songs are heard everywhere in IPods, CDs and radio! Why I am not making the kind of money that I expected? This is because people are sharing your music on the internet using as one of those methods to distribute your effort for free. So one person purchase it and hundredths just get it for free. All that time and effort that don't pay because of people around the world are just hearing your music for free.
Another example can be you sit down and start writing a security application that will eliminate 80% of all attacks. You devised a way to make this application learn to defend it self. You just run this application on a computer that does not have any protection and little by little the application learns how to block every virus, spam, Trojan horses, hackers and crackers attack. This application even pinpoints with GPS from where this attack comes. It takes 2 years of planning and development. You had done research and there is no application like this in the market and the DOD is interested on testing your application. If is as good as you say they will ask you to deployed on every base and government office of the US.
Now you see the end of working from pay check to pay check. Plans for a name for your company, the first office, the first contract and a lot of money coming in is almost at hand reach. Well some one makes a copy of your program and start giving it for free. The department of defense just downloads the application and start using it for free. All your dreams go to the garbage can.
The program eliminates 98% of any type of virus, worms, crackers or hackers risk, but you only get fame but no money. All this because people started to download the application for free. Every time your software is downloaded and installed push you a step farther from your dreams.
Every time that we download an application, movie, book, a song, file or any type of digital media that was intended to be sold we, do something wrong and we are stealing. Because the main intention for this to be developed, written, marketed was to generate $$$$. But you steal it and this is not painful until you wear the shoes of the author.
There are many ways to rationalize this behavior is by saying that those big companies have enough money. But that is not the point. The situation is that you are stealing the dreams of a small company or the income of a big multinational business. Artists can get a dollar for each record. So if they sell 10 copies and the songs are shared with 100, 000 people they made $10 dollars and not $100, 000.
If a company selects several radio stations to let you hear the music for free is because is been done as a promotion so you go and purchase the CD or the single. And it was their decision to do that. They give some to get some.
In conclusion, I don't support any type music downloads (or movies or documents or any copyrighted media that was intended to be sold), because this is a way of stealing not only to the BIG company that sells them but the person or group that did his work. If some one sweat doing something to earn money, it is fair that we pay for that effort. We can not pay with a justification wrong actions. That won't make their dreams true or pay the dues of all the other people that work in this industry.
What it should be done? Three words ....Stop doing it.
