The Journey
It started as an interest in a small leather pouch. It ended as my horrific separation from the "certainty" of the life I had previously known.
A decade ago, or so it seems, I accompanied my wife and mother-in-law to a Native American Pow-Wow that had drawn an amazing number of visitors. Many booths, Teepee's and tents were selling everything from real fur, tomahawks, beads, food, and even cheap toys for kids. Many Native Americans were in attendance, with several tribes represented. Dancing, drumming, and exquisite 'costumes' stimulated all of our senses. We stopped at a tent, manned by two women, apparently of Native American heritage, and perused their offerings of little fringed leather bags and small, smooth, brightly colored stones. "Those are medicine bags, " the younger woman said. "You put healing stones, totems, and other personal items in them, and wear or keep the bag with you always." The older woman, dressed in a simple, time worn doeskin dress was well into her twilight years, but with dark, deep, piercing eyes that you know reflected a lifetime of wisdom. She watched me intently as I chose what I thought was a neat looking bag with fringe on all sides. She drew closer to me as I decided which stones to purchase. On a whim and with a grin on my face I chose Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, and Tiger Eye. As I reached for my wallet to pay for our pouches and stones, the women leaned across the table and placed her open hand on my wrist. She did not grip my wrist, more she put slight pressure on it. My eyes were glued to hers as she spoke softly to me. "Do not mock the power of the spirits and Earth without regard to the consequences." That sounded like a warning to me, but warning of what? At home I couldn't wait to hop on the computer. As with many Google searches, my original topic soon became blurred as I jumped from website to website. The original search words, "healing stones", somehow led me to "Spirit Guide Journeys". I discovered references to Shamans, Medicine Men and Women, and even theories of prehistoric people's spiritual leaders taking part in this trance like journey into another dimension. Seemed like something interesting to pursue, although I didn't believe a word of these legends. A trip to the second hand book-tape-video store added an audio tape titled "Drumming of the Shamans". Two dollars for 90 minutes of drumming: What a Deal! That night I prepared for my journey. I actually laughed as I lay down in bed, facing the ceiling, just like the website said. What was I trying to prove? Did I really think that I would be able to 'journey' to another dimension and meet my "Spirit Guide"? My rational mind said "You are an idiot. You are just playing Indian." The warning the old woman spoke to me popped into my thoughts, but I dismissed that line of thinking. Come on, this is 2009. Well, I'd gone this far, so what the heck. I grabbed my leather medicine bag, took out the amethyst (I did not need healing), but kept the Lapis Lazuli, for psychic power, and the Tiger Eye for increased perception. Yea, right! Curtains closed, lights off, candle lit, and headphones on, I hit the play button on the drumming tape. At first the rather fast drumming beat assaulted my ears. Borderline uncomfortable, the constant rhythm was, well, nothing like I had heard before. I lay still, remembering what the website explained as the proper procedure. I was to meditate on the drumming, and imagine walking through a field towards a large tree. As I approached the tree, I would see a hollow opening in the side of the tree, which I was to enter and descend down, down into the earth and into an entirely different world, the dimension of the spirits.
