Stop, Look, Listen, and Then Create
"There is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost." - Martha Graham
I have found when I'm "stuck" and nothing seems to go my way the chances are excellent that I'm doing things the same way that I previously did. If it didn't work then, it is highly unlikely that it will work out now. So much seems to go well in my life when I stop, observe, listen, formulate a plan, and then take action. In other words, I get creative when I get stuck.
Notice there is no magic to just taking an old or ineffective idea and either replacing it or "tweaking" it for more effective use. This is a skill you can develop and it starts with awareness.
Here are the five steps I use in the creative process:
- Be clear about what the challenge or problem is. If you are hazy about it, the outcome will be hazy. If its painful, chances are you are very clear about what the problem is.
- Brainstorm! Generate as many ideas as possible as quickly as possible. Don't stop to evaluate until the brainstorming is over. Let your imagination go!
- Narrow down the list to the best idea(s).
- Create goals connected to your idea. Be specific and be sure to make time sensitive goals to keep yourself on point.
- Do something and do it now! No action, no traction!

You must always be developing, growing and becoming better. If you are not already a voracious reader, find the time each day to read or even listen to a book. I find that listening to a book during travel time is a great way to gain knowledge, find new information and absorb new ideas. There are several wonderful websites where you can find a huge selection of audiobooks. Successful people are readers who revel in self-educating each and every day!

Get involved with "go somewhere" "do something" people who will reinforce what you are trying to get done. Volunteerism is a great way to meet these types of people.
None of the following excuses are acceptable.
"I want to learn a foreign language but can't." Nonsense. There are ways to get inexpensive iPods and mp3 devices for next to nothing or free. Get one, go to iTunes and download a free language program.
"I don't have any skills or talent." Nonsense. Go to a "mission and purpose" class at your church (or other religious institution), local community college, Landmark Education (or similar program), online, etc. and start to dig those hidden gifts and aptitudes out of yourself.
"I'm too old." NONSENSE. You are never too old to go back to school. You are never too old to start eating better. You are never too old to start an exercise program. You are never too old to start painting. The list goes on but you get the idea. No excuses. You may be too old to run the 100-yard dash in the next Summer Olympics but are you too old to stay active and creative in some other way? No.
Lack of learning and lack of action strangle creativity. Get moving, get involved in your life and watch your mind and creativity come to life.
"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out." Proverbs 18:15 (New International Version)
2010 Theodore Henderson
